Kohnen '98 talks about Servant Leadership with students

Ryan Kohnen ’98, who became TMI’s chief advancement officer in July 2017, gave a talk on servant leadership to the student body Sept. 11 during daily chapel.

Ryan, a former entrepreneur who founded a business at age 20, quoted Robert K. Greenleaf, who coined the term servant-leadership in 1970: “The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.…A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong.”

During his first year at TMI, Ryan told the students, he joined some activities but didn’t go out for leadership positions. In his second year, while at a meeting of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, “I thought the leaders would be the people who already had been secretary, treasurer or vice presidents.” He was surprised when his friend, Chris Adams ’99 nominated him for president and more surprised still when he won and found out he enjoyed the work of leadership.

“My challenge to you is to focus this year on identifying someone who is ready to lead but might not know it,” Ryan said to the students. “Who could you empower? Maybe you’re the person who could give them the confidence to step up and lead.”
Ryan is the author of Young Professional’s Guide to Success, a 2009 book that shares advice and stories from over 70 CEOs, top executives and community leaders. He currently leads the TMI Advancement Office, where he is responsible for overseeing all aspects of TMI's advancement program, which includes annual giving and special events, alumni relations, endowed gifts, planned giving and capital campaigns.
