How to make a gift of appreciated stock

  1. For specific instructions on how to transfer stock to TMI please contact the Advancement Office at (click here for TMI's Stock Donation Form).
  2. TMI will send you an acknowledgement and a receipt for your gift, based on the average of the high and low value of the shares on the date TMI received them.

  3. You receive an income tax deduction for the full market value of your shares and avoid all the capital gains tax that you would have owed had you sold them.

Two important things to remember about gifts of stock:

  1. If the stock is worth more than you paid for it, be sure to transfer the stock to TMI first.

  2. If the stock has gone down since you bought it, sell it first to generate a tax deductible loss, and then make a gift of the cash.
