TMI alum shares keys to success

Alumnus Rudyard Hilliard, M.D., shared his “Five Lessons of Success” with the student body of TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas in a special talk Jan. 23 during daily chapel services in the school’s All Saints Chapel.
A member of TMI’s class of 1995, Hilliard is an emergency medicine and family-practice physician who has served on the school’s Board of Governors. He advised students to consider the lessons he said had learned after graduation from TMI:

1. Prayer works: “And it’s important in everything you do.”
2. Determination works: “If you don’t give up, you still have a chance.”
3. Choose the right friends: “Success is a team effort; spend time with people who have the same dreams you do.”
4. Change your perspective: “You can learn by looking at things from a different viewpoint.”
5. Be appreciative: “When you are thankful, the people around you will give you even more.”

After the talk, he met informally with students in grades six through 12.
Hilliard earned his bachelor’s degree from Howard University and his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He is a cofounder of Icon Talks, a movement that presents community discussions with iconic figures including actors, activists, athletes and CEOs.

At TMI, he was a company commander in the Corps of Cadets (JROTC), a member of the National Honor Society, played varsity football and acted in school plays.
