Student poem chosen for Via 2018 Poetry On The Move

Congratulations to junior Juliana Martinez for having her poem selected by Via Metropolitan Transit to be displayed on an interior card on a via bus as part of the Via 2018 Poetry On The Move program.
Juliana’s poem is one of 20 poems (10 student/10 adult) that was chosen to be illustrated by local student artists and printed and placed on several Via buses running regularly through the city in celebration of National Poetry Month. Her poem, along with the illustration done by Bella Siptak of Say Si, was the only one chosen out of all 20 to be placed in the National Poetry Month Calendar of San Antonio official print ad that will be distributed throughout the entire city for the month of April.

Juliana, along with the other poets and artists, was recognized and given the opportunity to recite her poem at the VIA Poetry on the Move Winner’s Reception on Thursday, March 29. This event is an official event for the City of San Antonio in celebration of National Poetry Month.

“A Lie That Daddy Told Me”
By Juliana Martinez

Feet pounding on unyielding earth
Breath comes in ragged bursts
Foot catching briefly on a rock
A most unpleasant lurch
Stop and sway
And clutch my head
I hurt so much I must be dead
I know you said it would be fun
But why did I agree to run?
