TMI junior wins first for history paper

Brandon Rubsamen, a junior at TMI Episcopal, was awarded first place in the Senior Division for the Kate Harding Bates Parker Award in History from the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA)/Junior Historians of Texas.

The award, for writing on local or Texas history, was presented at a luncheon during the Junior Historians Annual Meeting, held April 7 at El Tropicano Riverwalk hotel. In addition to a prize of $150, the award includes publication of the winning paper in TSHA’s Texas Historian journal next October.

For his paper, “From Alamo Heights to Even Greater Heights,” Rubsamen consulted primary and secondary sources to trace the reasons for TMI’s move from Alamo Heights to its present Alkek Campus in northwest San Antonio. It was originally written for a TMI course in military history taught by Kristian Marks, a retired Army colonel who previously taught at the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) and the Ohio State University, and encouraged Rubsamen to submit his essay to the contest.

At TMI, Rubsamen is a member of the National Honor Society, the National Junior Classical League’s Latin Honor Society and was chosen to serve as a mentor in the school’s mentorship program with Leon Springs Elementary School. He recently became an Eagle Scout, Boy Scouting’s highest rank.
