TMI Latin students claim first at Baylor

Students of Latin from TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas won firsts in two classics competitions held Feb. 17 at Baylor University in Waco.
Known as Certamen (a quiz bowl-style challenge on knowledge of the Latin language and Roman culture), and Probatio (a version of Certamen for larger groups), the contests were part of Baylor Latin Day, an annual event for classics students from all over Texas. TMI’s team of Garrett Greiner, Amanda Kyle, Bridget Lynch and Lucas Prado took first place in Certamen, and the team of Chase Blackwell, Jessica Cox, Jonathan Garcia and Joey Kyle tied for first in Probatio.

This year’s Latin Day also included a lecture on acrostics in ancient literature by Baylor Classics Professor Julia Hejduk, a workshop on Roman architecture and a performance of Plautus’ play “Aulularia” (“The Pot of Gold”) performed by Baylor students.

“This group of students represented TMI in excellent fashion,” said TMI Upper School Latin teacher Alleyne Rogers, “(and) a good time was had by all.”
