TMI boys soccer wins state championship

The TMI Episcopal boys varsity soccer team won the 2019 TAPPS Division II Boys Winter Soccer State championship game Feb. 22 at Waco ISD Stadium in Waco. The Panthers defeated Prince of Peace Christian School of Carrolton 3-2 in an exciting game, trading goals with the Eagles.
TMI took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by junior Joseph Kuri as he dribbled through several players before finding the back of the net. After Prince of Peace tied the game, junior Diego Ampudia scored dramatically from 35 yards out on a direct kick, as the ball squeezed into the upper right-hand corner of the goal, giving TMI a 2-1 halftime lead.

After the Panthers extended their lead 3-1 on a goal from sophomore Patricio Parra, Prince of Peace scored a late goal to make the game 3-2, but TMI’s defense led by junior Santiago Vigil and sophomore Simon Rupe held on for the win.

TMI’s victory followed a 20-2-1 season in which they won their sixth consecutive district title and averaged more than four goals per game. While seniors such as Colby Guillory will be missed next year, with all starters returning, the future of TMI boys soccer seems assured. Head Soccer Coach Oscar Muñoz was “especially proud of the way the team came together to support each other,” and Assistant Coach Luis Murillo noted that, “The season would not have been so successful without the active support from parents and the Athletics Department.”
