TMI students earn top Scholastic art awards

Thirteen Upper School students from TMI Episcopal won a total of 25 awards in the 2019 San Antonio Scholastic Art Awards, including five top Gold Key awards and several students with multiple awards across categories.
The competition drew more than 2,100 submissions this year; winners were chosen by judges for originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal vision.

Senior Oluwatomike Falebita won three Gold Key awards for her paintings, as well as two honorable mentions for painting and drawing; and senior Kelly Jung won a Gold Key for painting and three Silver Keys for drawing and Art Portfolio. Senior Jessica Zhou won a Gold Key for drawing and two honorable mentions for drawing and painting. Junior Samantha Dickie earned a Silver Key in photography.

Senior Briana Quintanilla received two honorable mentions in drawing and photography; senior Kristina Samuel received two honorable mentions for drawing and painting; and Andrea Trevino, two for drawing. Honorable mentions also went to junior Simon Bruhn for Architecture and Industrial Design; senior Colby Guillory, painting; senior Owen Guo, digital art; sophomore Chloe Harthan, drawing; freshman Sara Homma, drawing; and junior Hannah Lashway, photography.

TMI’s five Gold Key-winning student artworks will be displayed at the Feb. 1 San Antonio Scholastic Art Awards Ceremony and will be exhibited Feb. 1-14 at the headquarters of the SAY Si! youth arts organization, 1518 S. Alamo St. A painting by TMI Fine Arts teacher Cassandra Gnehm also will be on display.

Gold Key works are entered in national competition; national Scholastic Art Awards will be announced in March.
