TMI scholars awarded national honors

Eight seniors at TMI were honored for their academic accomplishments by national recognition programs Oct. 21 during daily chapel.
Michael Galo and Nicolas Perez were recognized by the College Board’s National Hispanic Scholars Recognition Program. Both scored in the top 2.5 percent on the 2015 PSAT/NMSQT among all Hispanic and Latino test-takers in this region. The College Board shares information about the achievements of recognized students with colleges and universities.

Elizabeth Holmes, Alexandra Prado and Hannah Wool were named semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Program. All three students took the PSAT-NMSQT in 2015 and earned among the 16,000 highest scores out of two million students who took the test at that time. As semifinalists, they have qualified to go on in the prestigious scholarship competition.

To advance, semifinalists must maintain an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be recommended by their head of school and earn SAT scores that confirm their earlier performance on the qualifying test. Those who become finalists will be notified in February, and scholarship winners will be selected from that group, to be announced next spring.

Austin Carothers, Joshua Kercheville and Julia Wool were named Commended Scholars by the National Merit Scholarship Program. All three placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million who took the 2914 Preliminary SAT-National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, earning among the 34,000 highest scores.

Based in Evanston, Ill., the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) is a nonprofit organization established in 1955 to conduct the National Merit Program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC and by business organizations and institutions of higher education.
