Corps of Cadets

Keepers of TraditionMuch of the rich tradition of excellence and leadership at TMI rests with the Corps of Cadets, founded with the school in 1893.

Designated as one of the highest ranked Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) programs in the country, this optional program uses a military structure to develop leadership skills. The Corps is open to all students in grades 6-12.

Values emphasized through the Corps include integrity, dependability, self-discipline, commitment, respect, and loyalty.

CORPS

With a legacy of leadership and discipline, the Corps of Cadets is the heart of TMI’s leadership development. Cadets build camaraderie, responsibility, and resilience through structured training, service, and mentorship.

Steele Tower and the Confidence Course

The Corps’ training and leadership development are elevated through Steele Tower, TMI’s on-campus rappel tower, and the confidence course, both designed to help Cadets push beyond their comfort zones, build trust, and strengthen teamwork. These hands-on experiences foster courage, confidence, and resilience—qualities that define TMI leaders in all they do.

Within the Corps, Cadets can pursue a variety of special teams and roles that allow them to develop specialized skills and take on meaningful leadership responsibilities. Whether serving as a platoon leader, participating in the Color Guard, or joining competitive teams such as Orienteering, Raiders, or Marksmanship, each Cadet has the chance to challenge themselves and contribute to the shared spirit of the Corps.

Two of the Corps’ most anticipated traditions—Adventure Day and the Commandant’s Cup—bring Cadets together in powerful ways. Adventure Day is designed to build camaraderie through team-building challenges and outdoor experiences that strengthen bonds across companies and grade levels. Later in the year, the Commandant’s Cup channels that same spirit of unity and competition as special teams face off in field day-style events to earn the coveted title.

Another signature event, the Military Ball, celebrates the history, excellence, and enduring military tradition of the Texas Military Institute Corps of Cadets. Each year, more than 500 attendees—including Cadets, students, parents, and members of the TMI community—gather for a gala evening steeped in time-honored customs such as the Saber Guard, Grand March, and formal toasting.
