TMI students shine in classics contests

Three students from TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas earned top places in competitions at the National Junior Classical League convention, held July 23-29 at Troy University in Troy, Ala.
Senior Peter Fera, junior Bridget Lynch and sophomore Amanda Kyle, who had previously competed at the area and state levels, joined about 1,600 other students from all over the United States at the annual event, where they competed in academic and creative arts contests and enjoyed games and other classically themed activities.

The TMI students participated in more than 30 competitions, placing in the Top 20 of more than 10 subject areas. Fera placed fifth in boys Dramatic Interpretation (performance of a passage of Latin poetry) and Kyle’s team placed fifth in Open Certamen (a quiz-bowl game). They also took part in the convention’s daily general assemblies, nightly state fellowship meets, election of national officers and colloquia on a wide range of classical subjects.

On the way to the convention, the TMI team, chaperoned by Latin teacher Alleyne Rogers and parent volunteer Cassie Lynch, stopped in Baton Rouge, La., to tour the historic capital district; on the return trip, they paused in New Orleans, where they explored the French Quarter, attending a performance of the Preservation Hall jazz band, and toured an above-ground cemetery.

Formed in 1936, NJCL is the largest classical organization in the world, with a membership of more than 50,000 middle- and high-school students. JCL is the second-largest youth organization in the United States, after only the Boy Scouts.

The JCL creed states, "We the members of the Junior Classical League covenant to hand on the torch of classical civilization to the modern world. We believe an acquaintance with the civilization of Greece and Rome will help us understand and appraise this world of today, which is indebted to ancient civilization in its government and laws, literature, language, and arts. We affirm the JCL experience develops responsibility, fosters brotherhood, promotes enthusiasm , encourages competition, inspires dedication, and enriches our total growth."
