TMI dean named education leader

Jill Cross, Dean of Curriculum and Instruction at TMI - The Episcopal School of Texas, has been invited to become an Influence Leader for the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), a nonprofit organization that supports professional learning for educators.
As an Influence Leader for the next year, she will be given special support and peer-networking opportunities to enhance advocacy skills and to increase policy knowledge. Cross was one of only two independent-school professionals selected for this select cohort of educator advocates.

She was chosen for the yearlong program on the basis of her previous active involvement with ASCD as a member of the class of 2016 of ASCD’s Emerging Leaders program, which prepares educators for leadership roles. She also is a contributing writer for the organization’s InService blog.

Previously Director of Teaching and Learning at the Maclay School in Tallahassee, Fla., Cross started last month in a similar role at TMI, where she will collaborate with faculty in establishing learning objectives for all courses, working with teachers to implement best-practice methods for planning, instruction and assessment. She also will work with the school’s Upper School and Middle School division heads to create and present faculty professional-development opportunities, including on-campus and off-campus training.

“Jill will be a tremendous resource in helping TMI become a community in which research-based best practice in teaching and learning is modeled and supported,” said The Rev. Scott J. Brown, TMI’s headmaster. “We are proud that she received this national recognition from other curriculum-development professionals and look forward to working with her to strengthen our own mission as an excellent educational community.”

ASCD, founded in 1943, is headquartered in Alexandria, Va., and represents more than 115,000 educators from more than 128 countries.
