TMI students welcome grandparents

TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas welcomed more than 150 grandparents and “grandfriends” (surrogate grandparents) of students to campus for its Nov. 16 Grandparents and Grandfriends Day.
The annual event included a program with a performance by the TMI Choir, previewing the Dec. 8 Christmas Concert and student speakers on the topic of “How TMI Has Helped Shape Me.” Representing the TMI Middle School was Sydney Scrimpshire, a seventh grader, who praised the school’s challenging academics: “Our teachers always encourage us to go deeper.” Upper School speakers were junior Gregory Arcuri, who credited TMI for his academic progress and the warm welcome he received after moving from Massachusetts; and senior Ana Paula Velasco, battalion commander of the Texas Military Institute Corps of Cadets, who thanked TMI for giving her “the tools I needed to be a better leader” and for encouraging students to “embrace their passions.”

Matthew Blake, Ed.D., head of Upper School and a member of the TMI class of 1985, commented that his teachers “had a lasting effect on me. I admired them and wanted to be like them.,” inspiring him to pursue a career in education and with this school year, “to come back (to TMI) and have an effect on people here now as well.”

Stephen Walker, executive chairman of the TMI Board of Governors and a TMI grandparent, spoke on “Why I Support TMI” and said that “People often ask me what we’re doing at TMI now…(I answer,) ‘A lot of things, and changing lives is the most important.’“

The event concluded with campus tours by the TMI Ambassadors, a student group that hosts campus visitors, and a luncheon in Frost Athletic Center for grandparents and their grandchildren.
