Author brings summer reading to life for TMI students

TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas welcomed William Kamkwamba, author of an autobiography, “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind,” spoke Sept. 23 to the student body during daily chapel.

Kamkwamba spoke on the events detailed in his autobiography, which was assigned as summer reading to incoming TMI freshmen. The book details his efforts to bring electric power to his drought-stricken village in Malawi. Unable to go to high school because his parents couldn’t afford the fees, he tried to keep up by borrowing books from the school library. From one of them, he learned to build an electricity-producing windmill from spare parts.

When a visiting foreign journalist learned of Kamkwamba’s accomplishment, a story that eventually developed into a documentary film and a book brought the young inventor to the world’s attention. He received offers of admission from several colleges and universities and is a 2014 graduate of Dartmouth College.

“Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you cannot do something,” he told the TMI students. “If you don’t give up, there’s nothing you cannot do.”
