Mission and History

Our Mission

TMI provides an exceptional education with values based on the teachings of Jesus Christ that challenge motivated students to develop their full potential in service and leadership.

Our Core Values

At TMI Episcopal, our Core Values shape every aspect of campus life and guide our students as they grow into thoughtful, purposeful leaders. The purpose of these Core Values is to create a "moral compass" that guides our students to grow W.I.S.E.R. day by day, so we may become an excellent educational community which develops their full potential in service and leadership.

Established in 1893

TMI Episcopal was founded in 1893 by the Rt. Rev. James Steptoe Johnston, the first bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. Originally established as the West Texas School for Boys, the school was created to develop young men of faith, intellect, and integrity, with a strong foundation in military leadership. For much of the 20th century, TMI operated as a respected military boarding school, gaining national recognition for its academic rigor and leadership formation.

Over the decades, TMI evolved to meet the needs of a changing world. In 1972, the school welcomed its first female students, becoming coeducational. The military program transitioned to optional participation and was eventually retired, making way for broader leadership development programs that reflect today’s best practices. In 1989, TMI moved from its downtown San Antonio location to a new 80-acre hilltop campus on the city’s northwest side—an inspiring setting that continues to shape our vibrant learning community.

Today, TMI serves students in grades 6–12 as a leading college-preparatory, Episcopal school with day and boarding options. Though much has changed, our mission endures: to empower servant leaders with wisdom, integrity, and purpose in service to the world.
