Rising senior named Man of the Year

Rising senior, Chad Harthan, raised over $290,000 to become The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Man of the Year”. A leukemia survivor himself, Chad has been in remission for 15 years now.
SAN ANTONIO, TX (JUNE 17, 2016) – Seventeen candidates from San Antonio raised at total of $1.59 million in 10 weeks breaking a fundraising record for the city’s chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Chad Harthan, 17, of San Antonio, raised over $290,000 in 10 weeks to best 9 fellow fundraisers to become The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Man of the Year”. The 17-year-old, a leukemia survivor himself, has been in remission for 15 years now. Come this fall, he will begin his senior year at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas.
April Ancira, of San Antonio, raised over $234,000 during the 10 week campaign, becoming The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Woman of the Year” and the highest fundraising woman in the history of the San Antonio campaign. April earned the title by raising more funds than her 5 fundraising counterparts.
April is the Vice President at Ancira Auto Group. She lives in San Antonio with her husband and two children.
The Man and Woman of the Year competition has been held across the country for the last 20 years. The South Central Texas Chapter catapulted into the Million Dollar Campaign ranks for the first time in 2013 and continues to raise the amount of funds brought in each year.
For the South Central Texas Chapter - San Antonio campaign 17 candidates raised a record-setting $1.59 million this year. This amount included an auction that raised almost $175,000.
“San Antonio individuals and businesses really came through in a big way supporting our candidates,” says Jessica De Souza, Campaign Director, explaining that this is the first time local fundraising has surpassed $1.5 million for the highly competitive Alamo City version of Man and Woman of the Year.
This is the 23rd year nationally and the eighth year for the San Antonio chapter to participate.
Craig Browning, of Phyllis Browning Co., was the runner-up in the men’s division and Lou Ann Hughes, of Lou Ann Hughes P.C. and Performance Probiotics, LLC, was the runner-up in the women’s division.
The San Antonio chapter also had an All Star Candidate this year. Trenton Leffingwell, 17, of San Antonio, was the 2011 Man of the Year. Trenton is competing against other All Star candidates across the country to be named All Star Man of the Year. The winner of this competition will be named after all campaigns have wrapped up.
Trenton lost his father to leukemia when he was 2 years old. In 2011, he raised enough money to have a research grant named in memory of his dad, and he became Man of the Year for the South Central Texas Chapter in San Antonio at 12 years old, the youngest person in Texas to win Man of the Year.
The Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s Man and Woman of the Year campaign is a fundraising competition in communities across the United States in which participants vie for the title of Man or Woman of the Year. They raise funds for blood cancer research in honor of local children who are blood cancer survivors.
